Takashi "Shiro" Shirogane is a former skilled pilot of legendary reputation from the Galaxy Garrison who was taken captive by the Galra Empire during a mission to Kerberos. He became a famed gladiator heralded by the other slaves as the "Champion" in the Galra arena, and was experimented on and given a prosthetic arm. Shiro's sudden return to Earth a year later with claims of aliens on the attack triggers the events leading to the return of Voltron. He functions as a Paladin of Voltron who pilots the Black Lion of Voltron, acting as the leader of the five Paladins until the initial defeat of Zarkon, when he mysteriously disappears. Unknown to his friends, just before Shiro’s death, his essence was absorbed into the Black Lion. Shiro does not truly return until the existence of his clone is revealed and Allura transfers his essence from the Black Lion into the clone's body, fusing them into one being. He then becomes the captain of the Atlas."Shiro" (dubbed "Kuron" by the fanbase) is one of the dozens of clones of Shiro created by Haggar and the Galra Empire as part of Operation Kuron. He is the only known clone to have been activated and successfully infiltrate Team Voltron after Shiro mysteriously vanishes following the team's initial defeat of Zarkon. Apart from chronic headaches and feeling that something is "off", "Shiro" always believes himself to be the real Shiro and never seems aware that he is a clone, even after Haggar takes control of him and turns him fully against Team Voltron. Once "Shiro" is defeated and subdued after he battles Keith, Allura transfers the real Shiro's spirit essence from the Black Lion into his clone's body, combining the personalities of both Shiros and restoring Shiro's physical existence. As such, Shiro retains all his clone’s memories after they fuse, and "Shiro" essentially becomes a part of Shiro’s consciousness.
